US Shopping Cart Update

Michael Newsletter reader Marlene N. recently pointed out to us that it would be quite interesting to update the US shopping basket that we compiled back in the year 2000 (Rundbrief 08/2000), to shock you with the horrendous cheese prices here in San Francisco. Surprisingly, most prices have remained about the same, only the rent has increased significantly.

Ware/Dienstleistung Dollars Euros
1 Liter milk 1.80 1.39
1 Liter good (microbrew) beer (supermarket) 4.00 3.09
250g Gouda "Old Amsterdam" 7.50 5.80
1 Hamburger at McDonalds on sale 0.49 0.38
1 Rental car für 1 day including insurance 50.00 38.66
1 Burrito at Mexican restaurant 6.00 4.64
1 supermarket deli sandwich 5.00 3.87
1 pack cigarettes 6.50 5.03
1 bottle halfway drinkable wine 7.00 5.41
30 pack Twix (supermarket) 14.00 10.82
1 Liter regular gas 0.58 0.45
1 car wash by hand (outside/inside) 19.95 15.43
Good lunch at Chinese restaurant (per person) 8.00 6.19
Good and cheap dinner at restaurant (per person) 20.00 15.46

Monthly rent 2-bedroom apartment in our neighborhood 2800.00 2164.96

As you can see, if you take advantage of offers, you can live on very little money. However, with less income, we would then have to move to a more affordable area.
